About the American Legion:

  • “The nation’s largest veterans service organization, we relentlessly champion veterans and service member on Capital Hill, support military families, and are dedicated to preventing veteran suicide.”
  • Founded by an Act of Congress after World War I in 1919, The American Legion fiercely advocates for the unique needs of every generation of veterans, service members, and their families who pledge to protect our nation
  • The most local entity is a post. Some of our posts have buildings, chartable gambling, a bar, a restaurant. Some have none of these. The statewide entities are called “departments,” thus, we are the Department of Minnesota

The American Legion Department of Minnesota

  • More than 50,000 members, with 515 posts, organized into 10 districts. The American Legion’s mission is outlined by four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism and Children & Youth
